Understand These 3 Things Before Installing Art Gallery Lights

In any exhibition space, lighting is more than just a source of illumination. Art gallery lights play a crucial role in revealing fine details, creating the right atmosphere, and directing visitors’ attention to the displayed artwork. Choosing the wrong lighting can distort colors, reduce visible details, and ultimately diminish the overall visual experience.

That’s why, before installing art gallery lights, there are three essential factors you should understand to achieve a more refined, professional, and visually impactful lighting setup.

1. High CRI

One of the most important factors in gallery lighting is color accuracy. In works of art, every color carries its own character and meaning, making accurate color reproduction essential.

For this reason, when selecting art gallery lights, you should pay close attention to the CRI (Color Rendering Index) rating. The higher the CRI, the more natural and true-to-life the colors of an object will appear under the light.

Most art galleries use lighting with a CRI of at least 80 to 90 to ensure that paintings, photographs, and art installations maintain their natural appearance and closely reflect their original colors.

2. Light Direction

In addition to color quality, light direction is another key consideration when installing art gallery lights. The light is typically aimed directly at the main artwork to create a stronger visual focus.

This technique helps establish a clear focal point, naturally drawing visitors’ eyes toward the featured piece. Proper light positioning also creates a cleaner, more elegant exhibition space that is comfortable for visitors to explore.

3. Beam Angle

Another important factor to consider is the beam angle. The beam angle greatly affects how wide an area is illuminated by the light.

For smaller artworks, a narrow beam angle of around 15°–24° is generally the best choice because it provides a more focused beam of light. Larger artworks or art installations, on the other hand, typically require a wider beam angle of 36° or more to distribute the light more evenly.

Choosing the right beam angle allows each artwork to be displayed in proper proportion while avoiding excessive or uneven lighting effects.

Favorite Art Gallery Lights: Spotlights and Track Lights

Because they offer adjustable light direction and beam angles, the most commonly used art gallery lights are spotlights and track lights.

Both lighting options are ideal for art galleries, exhibition halls, museums, and commercial display areas, as they deliver focused, aesthetically pleasing illumination that enhances the presentation of every piece.
