When choosing a light, wattage is often one of the first specifications people look at. However, a higher wattage does not always mean that the light produced is brighter. To understand this, there is one important term you need to know, which is efficacy. So, what is efficacy and why is this value important when choosing LED lighting?
What Is Efficacy?
Efficacy is a measure of how efficiently a light produces light from the electricity it uses. Simply put, the higher the efficacy value, the more light can be produced from each watt of electricity.
Efficacy in lighting is measured using the unit lm/W (lumens per watt). Lumens indicate the amount of light produced by a lamp, while watts indicate the electrical power used.
Therefore, understanding what is efficacy can help you better understand the relationship between the brightness of a light and the efficiency of electricity use.
Efficacy and LED Lighting Efficiency
For example, the Morgen LED Bulb Ultimate uses 10 W of power and produces 1,400 lumens. This means its efficacy reaches 140 lm/W.
Meanwhile, another LED light with the same power consumption of 10 W produces 1,000 lumens, or around 100 lm/W.
Both use 10 watts of power, but the amount of light produced is different. From this example, it can be seen that the Morgen LED Bulb Ultimate has a higher efficacy, allowing it to produce more light from the same amount of electrical power.
Why Is Efficacy Important When Choosing Lighting?
Understanding what is efficacy means choosing lighting does not only depend on wattage. Lumen and efficacy specifications are also important for seeing how optimally a light can produce illumination from the power it uses.
Therefore, when choosing LED lighting, do not only look at the wattage number. Also pay attention to the lumens and efficacy value so your choice of lighting is better suited to your lighting needs while also supporting efficient electricity use.
